Look After Your Gums!

Gum disease (also known as gingivitis) and periodontitis, which can follow a case of gum disease, are two conditions that affect the teeth and gums.

The symptoms of gum disease are typically red and inflamed or swollen gums, or gums that bleed when you brush your teeth.

Most people have at least one case of mild gum disease during their lifetime. In the UK, it is estimated that 50-90% of the adult population has some degree of gum disease. Each year in the UK, there are six cases of severe periodontitis for every 100,000 people. Aggressive or early-onset periodontitis, where severe periodontitis is present before 35 years of age, affects 1-2% of the population.

Although gum disease is exceptionally common, there are things you can do to improve or even prevent problems occurring. At sawtry dental, we are proactive about good gum health and offer a wide range of gum treatments to tackle inflamed or bleeding gums. Regular consultations, scale and polishes, and an excellent oral health routine can all help your gums to heal.

With sawtry dental, you will be offered a comprehensive periodontal survey to measure how far advanced your gum disease is. We can also perform a wide range of periodontal therapies to control and stabilise your gum health. If you have moderate to severe gum disease, you may need several visits but it is important to get the problem under control in order to prevent future tooth loss.

By attending regular check-ups and regular scale and polishes at sawtry dental, you can greatly reduce the risk of gum disease and help protect your teeth.

Causes of Periodontal Disease

Poor Oral Hygiene

Inadequate brushing and flossing can allow plaque to build up, leading to gum inflammation.

Smoking & Tobacco Use

Tobacco use weakens the immune system and makes it harder for the body to fight off infections, including gum disease.

Hormonal changes

Hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy or menopause can make gums more susceptible to inflammation and infection.

Malnutrition

If you do not take foods containing the vitamins necessary for your body and teeth, your immune system weakens and your gums are adversely affected. It is advisable to consume meals rich in vitamins C and K.

Periodontal Disease Treatment

Our Periodontal Treatment Process

Consultation

The periodontal treatment process begins with a thorough dental evaluation. The dentist or periodontist examines your gums for signs of inflammation, bleeding, and recession.

Scaling and Root Planing

Often referred to as a “deep clean,” this non-surgical procedure involves cleaning between the gums and teeth down to the root. Rough spots on the tooth root are smoothed out to remove bacteria and provide a clean surface for gums to reattach.

Medication and Special Mouthwashes

Depending on the condition, antibiotics or medicated mouthwashes might be prescribed to combat bacterial infections.

Advanced Treatments

For advanced cases, surgical procedures like flap surgery or bone and tissue grafts might be recommended.

Lee was my dentist when he worked in a surgery in Sandy. When he left I became a patient at his new surgery even though it means a 40 minute drive each way. This is a decision I've never regretted as he is an excellent dentist and his team are wonderful. Thanks to you all!

I’ve been coming to Sawtry Dental for regular check-ups and recently underwent Smilelign teeth straightening, and I honestly couldn’t be happier. The whole team are so attentive, caring and friendly, the lovely nurses, super hygienist, everyone always makes you feel at ease and all services second to none. Dr Lee is incredibly thorough and takes the time to explain everything properly, which makes such a difference. The surgery itself is immaculately clean and I’ve never struggled to make an appointment, whether regular or emergency (after a bad hospital wisdom tooth extraction). Amazing service all round and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone 🙂

She was extremely professional, friendly, and made me feel completely at ease through the treatment. Everything was explained clearly, and quality of her work was outstanding. The whole visit was calm, comfortable, and stress-free. I am genuinely very happy with the results and would highly recommend Eleanor from Sawtry Dental Surgery.
